Founded in 2019, MIFF Montgomery International Film Festival is excited to bring the joy of film to the community for a third year in a row.
Ever since film became an integral part of the human experience, it has shaped many aspects of our daily life. Movies have influenced the clothes we wear, the popular hairstyles of the time, the foods we eat, the friends we choose to keep around us and even what type of person we aspire to be.
Compared to the films of the past, Hollywood has progressively commercialized films that feel more like fast food instead of a hearty, satiating meal. For audiences that want to nourish their mind, the modern day cinema is not filling enough for their voracious appetite that yearns for original thought.
The MIFF Montgomery International Film Festival was launched in the hope that more meaningful and nutritious films would be presented to the community, especially young audiences. Instead of feeding children McDonalds, they can be fed a balanced diet of wisdom, courage and inspiration.
Film in its purest form is art. We at MIFF, want to encourage filmmakers to devote their energy to making art instead of sales. MIFF invests in original filmmakers to support their production and distribution of their craft.
Although the world is still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still numerous filmmakers who cannot restrain their enthusiasm for creation. This year the film festival received nearly 400 films, 15 of which were shortlisted documentaries, short films and feature films.
This year’s film festival also set up a Chinese-language film competition unit and a youth film unit.
The judges of this year’s film festival spoke highly of the films that were shortlisted for the competition. Creators have created works of great artistic value under very limited conditions.
On September 19th, the Film Festival successfully held an online awards ceremony and announced the list of winners this year.

This year’s film festival specially commissioned the jury director Bao Zhenjiang to open an independent Chinese film competition unit. Bao Zhenjiang was responsible for the film selection, judging the films, and paved the way for a permanent Chinese film competition unit of the film festival. Director Bao Zhenjiang is very much aligned with the Montgomery International Film Festival’s mission of “Returning Films to the Doctrine of Art”, and hopes that more Chinese-language independent films can communicate and cooperate with independent filmmakers, teams and investors from all over the world through MIFF. He is very pleased that the senior filmmaker, Marc Baschet could join and support MIFF, because it is thanks to the hard work of filmmakers that dedicate their lives to art, like Marc Baschet that have made craft films continue to flourish in Europe in France today. Fortunately, there are still investors who treat movies as works of art, not for the sake of making money but for the spiritual enjoyment of the transformation of the soul. Chinese-language films need persistence, and the return of films to an art form requires the tenacity of filmmakers. Art is not just a delicacy on the table for the powerful. In the Chinese world, the ideology of art as superfluous is deeply ingrained, and it is up to the artists themselves to change this philosophy.
The epidemic of unoriginality continues to spread all over the world. People are waking up to the lack of artistic authenticity. The unrestrained “political correctness” that is tied up to money is destroying human civilization. Like all artistic crafts, movies must also break free from the confines of commercialism. Filmmakers must ward off the plague of betraying art and turning it into a cheap drug of base entertainment.
Although the MIFF Montgomery International Film Festival is very small, we have received support and help from many friends and institutions, as well as the local government, because MIFF has the most precious thing, that is, the enduring flame of artistry.
